The Urban Oasis – A Luxury Contemporary Apartment in Gurgaon
Location: DLF Camellias, Gurgaon
Project Type: 4-BHK High-Rise Apartment (3,500 sq. ft.)
Client: Ananya & Arvind Chopra – Empty nesters in their late 50s, passionate about art, travel, and slow living
Design Brief: Create a refined, resort-like residence with clean lines, natural textures, and immersive comfort—balancing opulence with warmth and simplicity
Client Story
Ananya, a former textile designer, and Arvind, a senior legal consultant, had just transitioned into a quieter phase of life. Their daughters had moved abroad, and after decades in a Gurgaon bungalow, they chose to downsize—not in square footage, but in intensity.
They approached Awesome Creators with a simple but profound vision:
“We want a home that doesn’t demand attention. It should welcome you quietly, flow effortlessly, and offer the feeling of stepping into a five-star sanctuary—every single day.”
What they didn’t want: flashy surfaces, trendy finishes, or overly conceptual decor. They valued timelessness, tactile luxury, and lived-in ease.
Before: Builder-Grade Gloss
Despite being located in one of Gurgaon’s most premium residences, the unit had a generic base:
-
High-gloss Italian marble floors that felt too cold
-
Pre-installed cabinetry in factory laminates
-
Awkward L-shaped living-dining layout
-
Ceiling bulkheads with aggressive lighting that dominated rather than enhanced
-
Zero character or connection to the clients’ aesthetic preferences
Photos showed a shell that was structurally sound but soulless, overly reflective, and impersonal.
Design Challenges
-
Neutral Palette Without Monotony
How do you design in beiges, greys, and taupes without becoming bland or forgettable? -
Open Plan Coherence
The living-dining-bar space needed cohesion but also distinct visual identities for each function. -
Acoustic Comfort
With large glass facades and hard flooring, sound reverberation was a real issue. -
Custom Storage Without Visual Bulk
The couple needed discreet storage solutions without disrupting the clean visual flow.
The Design Response
1. Layout Redesign
Awesome Creators began by breaking the rigidity of the original layout:
-
Shifted the dining area closer to the balcony to capture natural light and framed it with an arch-paneled partition
-
Introduced a floating media wall in the living room that doubled as storage and a visual anchor
-
Created a soft transition from foyer to lounge via a sculptural slatted wood screen
This brought movement, softness, and zoning into what had previously felt like a large, hollow rectangle.
2. Material Palette & Finishes
The team opted for a layered neutral scheme, where subtle variations in tone and texture replaced contrast:
-
Floors: Buffed terrazzo in soft grey with fine brass inlays—custom cast for slip-resistance and acoustic softening
-
Walls: Hand-trowelled lime plaster in muted sand tones with inset wooden battens for warmth
-
Furniture:
-
Custom sectional in boucle upholstery
-
Mid-century inspired oakwood credenza with leather-lined drawers
-
Coffee table with a honed travertine top and powder-coated steel base
-
Brass, rattan, and natural stone repeated subtly across rooms, building quiet luxury without shouting.
3. Lighting Philosophy
Lighting was entirely reimagined to feel glow-y, not glitzy:
-
Recessed track lighting in living and art corridors
-
Fluted alabaster sconces beside the bar
-
A Murano glass chandelier over the dining table—reclaimed and re-wired from an old Delhi hotel auction
-
All lighting on dimmable circuits with motion sensors in transition zones
Even the bedrooms featured reading-optimized wall lights and hidden cove LEDs for soft ambiance.
4. Art, Textiles & Decor
Ananya’s love for textiles played a big role. The design team curated:
-
Handwoven Bhujodi rugs and runners in desaturated hues
-
A collection of Ananya’s framed textile art from her early years
-
Linen drapes with weighted hems in every room—subtle, grounded, and soothing
A feature wall in the study held travel mementos, ceramic sculptures, and Japanese calligraphy—making it a deeply personal sanctuary.
Sustainability & Eco-Friendly Features
This luxury home didn't compromise on eco-conscious choices:
-
Low-VOC materials used in all wall finishes, joinery, and adhesives
-
Upcycled timber and reclaimed brass in decorative accents
-
Smart HVAC system with room zoning to conserve energy
-
Balcony gardens with self-irrigation and greywater reuse system
-
All cabinetry crafted locally with E1-grade formaldehyde-free boards
-
No use of exotic hardwoods or imported marble—stone sourced from Rajasthan and MP
Even the AC grills and lighting panels were customized from metal scrap turned artisanal pieces by a Delhi workshop.
Before & After: A Transformation in Energy
The "before" pictures felt sterile, flat, and over-polished. In contrast, the after experience was nothing short of poetic.
-
Living Room: Now felt grounded and serene, with plush seating facing the green terrace and light bouncing off textured walls
-
Dining Room: Softened with an organic-edge dining table, pendant cluster lighting, and a curated ceramic centerpiece
-
Primary Suite: Transformed into a five-star suite with an upholstered wall, walk-in closet clad in white oak, and a hidden vanity niche
-
Guest Rooms: Doubled as study and retreat, featuring fold-down desks, murphy beds, and blackout linen curtains
The new home was no longer just a place—it was an invitation to slow down.
Client Reaction
Arvind’s comment at handover summed it up best:
“I didn’t know a home could teach you how to live better. It’s almost meditative now—everything has a rhythm.”
Ananya added:
“What I love most is that our home doesn’t fight for attention. It waits. It welcomes. It’s everything we didn’t know how to ask for.”
Final Takeaway
The Urban Oasis isn’t a showpiece—it’s a masterpiece of subtle sophistication. Every detail was crafted to serve function, emotion, and beauty with equal grace.
This project cements Awesome Creators' reputation for quiet luxury, intentional design, and eco-conscious execution, proving that luxury today isn’t loud—it’s thoughtful.
